Description
Join St. Philip's Episcopal Church, PBS North Carolina, and Working Films for a screening of "American Coup: Wilmington 1898." This documentary tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898 – the only coup d’état in the history of the US.
Stoking fears of “Negro Rule,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected, multi-racial government. Many Black residents were murdered, and thousands were banished from the city. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history.
Following the film, we'll have a simple Lenten supper with table discussion of the film, the insurrection, and how history becomes buried.
St. Philip's Racial Justice and Reconciliation Committee offers this evening as part of the work St. Philip's is doing to understand our history and build Beloved Community. Join us!
The film is appropriate for children ages 13 and older, with parental discretion. Childcare provided for children 12 and under.
